Music in Fashion

The music that flows through a culture seems to reflect how people within society want to present themselves. We copy the look of our music idols in the hope that we can somehow walk through life with the same confidence and beauty as they do, creating these generations of sheep who all somehow manage to wear the exact same outfits. Until we reach an age of independence, where the pressures from high-school and other peers have gone, we don’t totally come into our own self. Which means that there’s always groups of girls walking round in identical outfits and screaming over insignificant boy bands and usually, no matter what year you focus on, you find these sheep everywhere. If we look at the 90’s hip-hop era of baggy pants and chunky chains, that came from the rap stars such as Tupac, the iconic floral dress and oversized flannels inspired by the wonderful Kurt Cobain and the age of punk revolutionised from Vivienne Westwood but who also brought forward the rebellious band, The Sex Pistols. And from each of these awe-inspiring fashion eras, there are groups of people that adopt a particular style and love for a band until those genres fade out and something new is brought forward and they just follow the cycle of popular culture. But there are some who fall in love with a music genre and manage to always utilise those artists to help influence their style forever. And that’s where the connection between style and music becomes beautiful because you end up living your life through that relationship.

“They laugh at me because I’m different, I laugh at them because they’re all the same.”
For years the connection between music and fashion has always been strong. Even into the era of Instagram and Twitter we stalk the profiles of singers for inspiration instead of the true fashion heroes. “Music is one constant, MTV is everywhere in the world now. You go to Berlin and people are talking about Nirvana". The way the world saw music and fashion started to change because people realised music and fashion is not just part of what makes up the society we live in, they both equally make up what kind of person you are. With each song and band you discover your style begins to reflect the type of image that artist aims to present and moulds the type of human you end up sharing with the world.
Music and fashion working as one, impacting our world has created so many beautiful movements within society and will continue to do so and I think if anything, it’s just amazing to still be part of movements that are so magical and inspiring and I hope music and fashion remain a constant within each other.
I’d like to think of music and fashion working together to help create a rebellious and free environment so that eras such as grunge can continue to exist and grow and that new and exciting eras can also begin; “Creativity is the rebellion within existence” OHSO.
